Purpose of Practicum

Joining the SEA-Teacher Program is a rare and incredible opportunity, and I feel fortunate to be part of it. This program offers so much more than just an international experience—it is a platform to grow personally and professionally as an educator.
The purpose of the SEA-Teacher Program is multifaceted:
-
To enable student-teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy, helping them become more effective and innovative educators.
-
To encourage student-teachers to practice their English skills, as English is a key medium of communication in the global context.
-
To allow student-teachers to gain a broader regional and world view, fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.
-
To expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations, highlighting the importance of adaptability, creativity, and flexibility in education.

Procedures of Practicum

The sending university will select participants for the program, possibly through interviews or specific criteria. Chosen student teachers will have an interview with the receiving university. If selected, they will receive a Letter of Acceptance. Participants will be sent to their receiving university, which assigns them to schools for their practicum. The practicum lasts one month and includes observation, teaching assistance, teaching practice, and evaluation. After returning to their home countries, participants must complete the requirements set by SEAMEO.
Outcomes of Practicum
-
The student teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the culture of two different countries.
-
The student teachers will be equipped with diverse skills and experiences, preparing them to become global educators.
-
The student teachers will broaden their knowledge of the different educational systems used in the two countries.
-
The student teachers will enhance both their teaching skills and their English proficiency.
The challenges of Practicum
Language barriers were one of the challenges I faced during my practicum in Indonesia. Before coming here, I studied some basic phrases that I could use in everyday life. During my practice teaching, I always had my buddy with me, along with my cooperating teacher, who is very proficient in English. Additionally, most of my students speak English very well.
I also used body language and relied on technology when communicating with the locals. Overall, this experience taught me to be flexible and adaptable at all times.
